De 100 meest voorkomende woorden beslaan ongeveer de helft van de dagelijkse spreektaal. Met de volledige basiswoordenschat van 1000 woorden begrijp je ongeveer 85% van de typische gesprekken in het Engels - genoeg om te kunnen volgen en jezelf verstaanbaar te maken.
Het zijn de meest gebruikte woorden van de taal, geselecteerd op basis van woordfrequentie. Elk van deze woorden komt steeds weer terug in echte zinnen, dus elk geleerd woord loont direct.
